Markus Oehlen

In association with gallery Susanne Tarasieve, Carbon 12 has the pleasure to exhibit in Dubai the works of one of the most creative, original, and talented German artists of our time.

Markus Oehlen (*1956) was concerned with art since an early age. With his father Adolf Oehlen, a graphic designer and cartoonist, his brother Albert Oehlen, a musician and painter, and the energetic atmosphere of Germany in the early 80ies, Oehlen naturally pursued an artistic career in avant-garde art and music.
His approach to painting is unique and clearly stands out from the crowd of contemporary art strategies. By combining multiple influences from Symbolist and Surrealist, Pop and Op-Art, Oehlen creates a mixture of found, objective and subjective realities with his art works. You can feel the freedom of form, yet the precision in composition is omnipresent. The passive appraisal of form is neglected in favour of an active formation, the “cognitive change” constitutes perception itself as the principle of construction. Going beyond “pure painting”, Oehlen's analytical position is indispensable in today’s flood of images. After all, he lets us reconsider the “media” in media art.

Markus Oehlen (born in 1956, in Krefeld) is a German artist. He studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. His is formative participant of the German art movement Neue Wilde. He took part at the group exhibition Von hier aus – Zwei Monate neue deutsche Kunst in Düsseldorf in 1984. Since 2002 he is professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.
